Sierra Club Seal Society helps people understand and responsibly observe La Jolla’s harbor seals and sea lions. Volunteer docents speak with visitors about the animals and encourage respectful viewing, while data collectors record observations that support the society’s work.

This combines time by the ocean with a real public-facing responsibility. Docents need to enjoy talking with people and be willing to ask visitors courteously to give animals space. Training is provided, and the published program asks for a regular weekly commitment. If you prefer observation to conversation, ask about data collection and how that role differs from serving as a docent.
